We rented this movie the other night and we both really enjoyed it. Has anyone else watched it? If you did, and you live in the US, how well do you think Micheal Moore depicted your country's health care system?
I am Canadian and laughed when Micheal Moore was in Canadian hospitals asking patients questions about how long they waited for care and how much they had to pay for it. I had pretty much the same reaction they did; a giggle and a 'what'? LOL!
Also, for those that watched, did that exposure to what other countries have as health care make you want to have a changed system or are you happy with the system you have now?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Cost of insurance is outrageous, cost of doctors, hospitals and meds are sky high, people who don't have insurance basically just don't get health care because they can't afford it. People who are poor enough to be on state aid (welfare/the dole) get free or almost free medical care, the rich have insurance, the poor working class just don't go to doctors. Dental care is worse, welfare in most states don't cover dental for adults, social security does not cover dental or vision. It's a complete mess!!
My hubby works for a middle area business, considered small by industry standards. We have good insurance. I have 6 people, we are all covered for about $220/mo. Almost EVERY doctor I go to is covered. I can see any regular doc for a $10 and any specialist for $20 copay. Doesn't matter if they send me for blood work or even an MRI, it's all covered. My generics are $10 and brands are $20. If I wasn't so sick, it wouldn't cost me anything, but since I am, and see so many docs and am on so many meds, I spend about $150/mo. on meds and docs. I don't consider that bad at all. I was hospitalized in 2003 and it cost the ins. $24,000. My son was hospitalized in 2000 and it was $50,000. I can tell you, my ins. hasn't made ANY money off of me.
It's just my opinion, but at this point, I'm happy.

Of course, I don't think that some people should get care and others who can't afford it shouldn't...I think we could have clinics and hospitals that are supported perhaps by churches and other organizations and be considered a legitamate and much needed charitable cause. I don't think that a "socialistic" answer is our answer for us in America. With that type of system, we're certainly not going to have better "patient (customer) service..either will it promote more personal responsibility on the part of the patient with regard to his/her health. It takes away any "real" competition which is what drives businesses, ect... to do better, and have more competitive prices.
We can do better than that... but it's going to take time, and maybe some different thinking. I intend to watch his movie, even though I don't necessarily agree with his Philosophies since I feel we need to look at the Whole picture. There's no easy answers that's for sure. Surely with some of the great minds and brains in our country we could figure this out. Just my two cents.
when I was able to work, i worked for a home care company, and my job was to market to drs.. ( tell them why my company was better then the 500 other companies providing home care services to the patients..
the problem is back in the 80's the insurance companies refused to pay to keep people in the hosp for as long as they needed to be there. the drs were forced to send patients home to soon, but they promised to give them home care to help them recover at home. then they started telling the patients you will recover fastwer in your own home. some times they did, this was good for all concerned. then insurance refused to pay for treatments and testing, saying there was no proof that it worked. we let them get away with that too. then we let the insurance copanies dictate what medications they would cover. now the insurance copmanies are dictating how much home care a patients gets.. they will only pay x amount of dollars for each illness, we must make patients sicker then they are on paper, to get them the help they need.. drs, hands are tied, because the insurance dictates to them what they can and can not do..I was working with a dr. on my run last fall when I got sick with fibro to make changes.. I live in michigan and its really bad here. patients are sent home from the hosp 3 days after having heart attacks, or by-pass surgery and home care doesn't want them because we don't make any money on those kind of cases.. its all about the F------, money.
home care has become pay for perforance, which means, provide better care with less visits..... please forgive my mis spelled words as i too have lost my brain and can't even write a decent letter any more, but thanks for the vent...
