And that's the best I've got, LOL.
So why do we have this weird Presidents' Day thing in February? Simple. We used to celebrate the birthday of George Washington, first and probably still best POTUS. But Abe Lincoln got a lot of hype and cred, so ... well, his birthday is within a couple weeks of GWashington's, and some people still call this Washington's Birthday as a holiday even tho' it's just the 3d Monday of February regardless of date. (Lincoln b. Feb 12, Washington Feb 22.)
It's technically a federal holiday but not many get it off, and, let's be honest, other than hearing about the perpetual mattress sale in a TV ad, a lot of people probably don't pay attention till it's necessary or if they get the day off from work.
That said, let's check this out a second.
2/12 and 2/22. I'm thinking 2 is a lucky number in presidential birthdays. So, being me, I looked up ALL the presidents' birthdays. All.
Weird one: James A Garfield was the first (confirmed) left-handed POTUS.
Chester Arthur was an unknown whose big and only notable pre-POTUS action was that he got a streetcar company in the hot seat for abusing a black woman. The company integrated (no more back of the bus stuff). For 1800s America, this si huge stuff. His biggest claim that nobody realizes? He helped organize and create the civil service, and was, to most people's utter shock, responsible and generally honest. In short, so boring nobody remembers him.
That said, poeple only remember Millard Fillmore as a joke of being so un-memorable, but I bet nobody can list all our POTUSes at all, let alone in order, without looking up a few. I freely admit, I can't. (I always forget Harrison. I've no idea why. Just... *blip* There he went. Go figure.)
Ages of POTUS upon being sworn in? I was kinda surprised to find most were between 47 and 60, with a few exceptions back in the 1800s. (One of them died in office. Taylor.) Anyway, yeah. Like, 57, or 50, or 48, but not a lot of 60-plus going on... In point of fact, a handful, including current POTUS, inaugurated at age 70, the oldest ever at inauguration. INcluded in the 60-plus club? John Adams (POTUS number 2, at age 61); Harry S. Truman at age 60 on the dot, after FDR died; Gerald Ford & Andrew Jackson, also 61; Eisenhower at 62; that guy Taylor I mentioned was 64, as was GHWBush back in 1989; James Buchanan, 65; Harrison, 68; Ronald Reagan, 69. So, out of forty-plus POTUSes? That's 11 who were aged 60 or over at inauguration.
Basically, 1/4 of POTUSes.
What does this tell us? Nothing. Not a damn thing. Nope. ZIlcherooney. Just found it interesting. B/c I'm having a bad PTSD day and this sort of nerding out calms me down.
Teddy Roosevelt remains the youngest at inauguration at age 42.
Weird fact again: Only one sitting Vice President was ever elected to President before George HW Bush ... since Martin Van Buren. Yep. Being VP does *not* get you a ticket to the Oval Office unless POTUS dies. In which case, different ball game, as with both JOhnsons (LB and Andrew, so if your VP is surnamed Johnson, DUCK! --- JFK and Lincoln's VPs respectively). Or Arthur. Or so forth and so on.
Gerald Ford remains the only POTUS who wasn't elected to POTUS or VPOTUS. He was appointed VP after Nixon's VP resigned (Spiro Agnew) and then POTUS b/c Nixon resigned.
And on that boring note... Gerald Ford's two trips on stairs in public inspired Chevy Chase's tripping shtick on Saturday Night Live back in its early days.
May your Monday be mellow and gentle. I'm cancelling dental check-up so I can just... not PTSD trigger worse. Or Fibro worse. Usually the chair is nice, but today is not that day!
I was surprised that being a trauma survivor would come up at the dentist's office, but today it did. I had the roots of one of my front teeth die. It got brittle and broke off, so I had a nice dental implant done. I say nice with zero sarcasm. My dentist said it was interesting to him how that tooth's roots died like that, so he asked me if I'd had any blunt force trauma to that spot. I...
This past week, an extended family member was murdered by her psychopathic ex whom she was trying to get away from. She had just turned 21 yrs old and had her whole life ahead of her. He burned her body beyond recognition and tried to make it look like an accident. They couldn't even ID her. Over 10 years ago, this was almost me. I was stalked relentlessly by a guy I had briefly dated. It turned...
