Ironically, in an America where CEO pay has risen by something like 400% but average worker wages have not.... we celebrate the achievement of the labor (union) movements in gtting us these now-lost mythical crittesr:
1. 40-hour maximum work week
2. unless overtime is paid, mandatory
3. basic benefits such as workman's comp, health insurance, sick days, paid/unpaid vacation
4. safe working conditions
5. ways to report violations without losing jobs (AKA unions in some places)
The labor union movement has been going into stiffer and stiffer competition since 1947, when the veto of President HSTruman failed to override the Taft-Hartley Act, aimed at limiting the activities of and powers of unions. A mere 12 years earlier, the National Labor Relations Act had guaranteed the allowance of unionization.
So, while you're kicking back celebrating a day off (or not, as case may be).... Yep. There you go. "Labor Day". Now it's just barbecues and the end of summer and there we are...
Only two and a half hours of sleep so gonnna try to rest some. Pain got me at first, then... more pain. I was doing what I was told about "move gently during certain kinds of pain" b/c it supposedly helps loosen things up on my bad hip. Nope. Just made me curl up in a ball and whimper.
