My doctor just gave me LYRICA to try. He mentioned dizziness when I asked about side effects but that was it. When I started researching it the list of possible side effects was long and scary.
My aunt has taken this and she told me that she got a rash on her upper arms and then bruising. She said that it looked like someone grabbed her really hard or something.
The side effects that other FMS people reported on another site I checked out included dizziness, twitching, disorientation, depression, memory loss, blurred vision, a drunk or high type buzz, loss of dexterity, angina, insomnia, daytime sleepiness and many others. They have also said it is nasty coming off it and very bad to stop cold turkey. Not to say that there weren't a few who said that it was great and had helped a lot.
My problem is this: I have two kids at home (1&10) and my husband is gone most of the time (long haul truck driver). I am afraid to take this because I NEED to be able to take care of my baby! What if I get dizzy or disoriented and fall while holding him or drop him or am to out of it to take care of him properly?
There is no one else around to help most of the time. My 10 year old tries hard to be helpful but has ADD and tends to be a little flighty. I don't want to put too much on her at once and she is at school most of the time anyway.
Should I try it? Could this make me a danger to my baby? The pain is almost unbearable at times and I find myself wanting to hope that this is a miracle drug that they are pushing it as. ***CRYING INSIDE**
What should I do? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I would try to take it starting on a friday night or a day you know your hubby is going to be home for a few days at a time, if u have any side affects from it call your doc and tell him or her that u cant take this bcause u have whatever side affect it is that u r having and that your hubby is gone for work most of the time and that u cant take this med bcause u have an infant to take care of by yourself. There are several other meds out there that you can try.
I take neurontin. It works for me and is much cheaper than lyrica. It is similar to lyrica. I cant tell you what the difference is but ive heard from several members here that lyrica and neurontin are the same.
They all seam so busy most of the time and I have a strong aversion to asking for help from anyone, but I'll try to get past it.
The Doc said to weight to start till I get back The results of a bunch of blood tests he is running.
I am also about to have LASER EYE SERGERY next week and am concerned about any effects that the meds might have on that outcome.
It took me a week to edecide to take it. yesterday I started it. i don't notice any side effects yet. I am not more tired than usual. I am a bit surprised. I suffer from constant nausea and headaches and do notice that today i am less nauseas. It might be a coincidence. I'll keep you updated on how I do on this drug.
I dont' have any children, so my decision to try it wasn't as important as yours.
I tried Neurontin before. I did have side effects with that drug. I was very tired and forgetful, more that fibro fog.
I too have 2 children and i am a single mum but i am lucky mine are 10 and 12 and not so relient on me and can help me out.
I would explain to your 10yr old about this switch in meds and if he/she notice your abit "out of it" that they have a number of a neighbour of friend who could come over to help out. Both my children know about my meds and i have explained to them both how they might make me feel etc when i start taking them.
Good luck and i hope it helps, i shall keep my fingers crossed for us both xx
Helen-- I haven't been taking any meds at all because for the last nearly 2 years I was pregnant then nursing and simple refused to take anything. Before that I tried muscle relaxers (passed out on my keyboard at work) and antidepressants (didn't notice any change). Other than that I have occasionally smoked marijuana but only just enough to help and only after I know that my kids are asleep at night. I haven't had any for over a month now and I have been in so much pain that I can barely function.
Good luck, and remember that whatever decision you make, is the right one for you.
Are narcotics out of the question for some reason? I am a H-U-G-E advocate of FMer's being on narcotic pain meds. I have an EXTREMELY high threshold (meaning I have to take A LOT to feel any relief) for pain meds. A shot of morphine didn't even dull the pain, much less make me sleepy. So, I have to be on narcotic, and strong ones at that. If there's anyway you can take narcs, please, please ask for them! You will wonder why you waited so long.
I agree that the getting someone to come and sit with you, or waiting until you know when hubby will be home for a few days, is an excellent idea. Surely you can find someone to at least "watch" you guys for a few days.
I do just want to tell you, that I have read A LOT about Lyrica, and the two MOST common side effects are weight gain (I personally, put on 22lbs. in 2 weeks) and dizziness, or spaciness. I would think that the "drunk" feeling would interfer with parenting, but should stop when/if you stop taking the drug. It seems to leave your system within a day or two.
With all that said, for some people, it is an absolute miricle drug, and I completely think you should try it if you can work it out. You may be amazed. It may blow your fibro outta the water! I hope and pray that this does work you! None of us should have to suffer as badly as we do. It just isn't humane. (Don't forget to ask about narcotics!)
God Bless!!!!!!
