Hi! I went to the doctor yesterday and was prescribed "Deplin". It's Folic Acid, but helps anti-depressants work better. This is actually supposed to help with pain. It's one of the only meds. that work on Dopamine levels. I was wondering if any of you have taken it before? It's a fairly new!
More info. I found from another site:
I was in the doctor's office and picked up a pamphlet that said "Are you on an antidepressant and feeling better, but not well?" It hit me like a ton of bricks. That's exactly how I feel. Anyway, it said "what might lead to a partial response to my antidepressant?" And the answer is low folate. The theory is that the brain is not developing enough neurotransmitters due to insufficient folate in the brain. Some people may not have enough neurotransmitters for an antidepressant to work fully. Apparently depressed people consistently have lower serum levels of RBC folate concentrations.
There are some factors that are associated with low folate levels such as impaired folate metabolism, which is a genetic disorder that is present in half of the general population, some chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, atrophic gastritis, chrohn's disease and malignancies. Also, certain drugs such as antielptic drugs, lithium, oral contraceptives, antidiabetic drugs, methotrexate, sulphasalazine, L-dopa and lipid lowering drugs. Smoking, alcohol, and dietary folate deficiency.
Deplin is supposed to be unaffected by the body's inability to break down folic acid. One tablet is 7.5mg and is the bioequivalent to taking 75-800mcg folic acid tablets!
According to the pamphlet, you should feel an improvement in drive, initiative, alertness, concentration, mood and sociability. It takes up to 6 weeks to get the full affect.
I am really excited about it and pray that it does what it says because I've tried all the SSRI's and they just don't work like they used to. Hope this helps. Also, there are websites that you can go to, to get more info.

Thanks for information. I need to read about this & ask my doctor. I've been reading, seeing if changing my diet (along w/a workout) will work.

Hi again Honey, I thought from your first post that you had been on it. And maybe for 2 yrs., going by the date on the post. So I was wondering, did you try it back in '07 when your doc prescribed it? And yw, I'm researching it now so if ya have any questions I may have answers or can tell ya where I have found info. I pray you are better. It's been over 25 yrs now that I have been searching for help, and being a guinea pig. Blessings, JF

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
