Good morning, and happy THanksgiving to our Canadian friends:-) To those in the US, it's COlumbus Day, celebrating the fact a white guy figured out he was in India while he was in the Caribbean. Sorry, that still cracks me up sometimes. You discover how the planets move in the sky, cool. You decide you're in Asia when you're still several thousand miles off? Yeah, I'm somewhat less impressed.
Today in 1845, the US Naval Academy opened in Annapolis, Maryland. For the record, you still learn how to sail by the stars at Annapolis. They took a decade off, then realized (as do most of us) that your GPS may fail, your handheld batteries can go dead, and your computer *can* be hacked... or you satellite. So, to prepare for that contingency, the mids have to hold a sextant and figure it out a la Ye Olden Times. What's freaky to me in this is that I was taught young to figure out the four compass points using the sun and stars, assuming I didn't have my pocket compass handy anyway. Never occurred to me they need to make that a class. Map-reading is like second nature for me. (I blame my dad, Navy veteran, "prepper", and general all-around drill instructor from he**.)
In 1911, Sun Yat-Sen and his revolutionaries overthrew the Manchu dynasty, which had been in power (also know as the Qing dynasty) since 1644. The so-called "Boxer" rebellion of 1899-1901 was spurred in part by anti-foreigner hatred, and a severe drought-caused famine, and the feelings from that never died down, partly b/c the 'conciliatoin' wasn't going to undo the causes, and gave rise to serious warlords all over the place, so... Yep, Sun Yat-sen and the revolution rolled around. Note: Sun Yat-Sen had three principles: free trade, democracy, and nationalism. (The free trade one was termed more poetically as "the people's livelihood".) Sun Yat-sen is still called the Father of the Republic of China, even Taiwan likes him. He died in 1912.
Joe Namath ended his NFL career today, after a long and storied career, much of which involved knee injuries, and Broadway Joe went on to become a broadcaster, attempted actor, and so forth. Namath hails from the PIttsburgh, Pennsylvania, region, much like other greats of the game (Joe Montana, Dan Marino, Johnny Unitas... and that's just a fewo f the QBs). Yep, they breed good football in SW PA.
And just randomly, a branch of philosophy that deals specifically with the end of the world is known as "eschatology".
Have a good day, all:-)
I got hit by a truck. And, yowch.Well, metaphorical truck, AKA license plate FIBROCats ere howling.Weather change.Overdid it.And now my mom's landlord is doing another thing, and I just want to swear at them in Polish, but I can't get my pronunciation right, so I'm not saying what I want to say and it's laughable and irritating.(WHere I live in Virginia, nobody knows Polish. I can cuss all I want...
Ever have that moment when you realize that you made a mistake or things did not work out as planned? We all have, but it's important for us to remember that we did the best we could with what we had or the best we could given the situation and to have self compassion. Give members an idea of how they can show self compassion when things don't go as planned. How will you show yourself compassion...
