I was put on cymbalta about 2 months ago and I also take Elavil 150 mg a night. My doctor told me you should not mix Elavil and Cymbalta but he tired to change the Elavil to Trazadone and I had an allergic reaction to it so he put me back on Elavil???
My concern here is that I am still taking Elavil and Cymbalta together so he gave me an EKG which came out fine so he said to keep taking both the Elavil and Cymbalta.
My question is - Should I be taking these 2 meds together and why is it bad to take them together? My doctor said as long as the EKG is ok then there shouldn't be a problem but what if this turns in to long term??
Does anyone know about these drugs and why it's bad taking them together? Maybe that's why I am so tired lately....
Thanks for any help,
V

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I told the Shrink later and he agreed that both meds together should be fine.
I, learned on my own, that I don't need the Elavil everyday so I take it only when the sleep is hard to come by.
Aren't you always tired, though? I am.
Good luck on your search and a great big hug to you!

I'm sure I'll feel the repercussions for saying this, but most (not all) drs are not well educated about drugs, esp, drug interactions. Many of these drugs are relatively new w/not enough tracking time to know what they can/can't do. Drug reps usually only provide pamphlets briefly describing the GOOD stuff about their drugs.
We live in a buyer beware society and unfortunately it is up to us to do the research and ASK questions (even tho we usually have no idea what to ask until it's too late).
Try going to google.com or ask.com & typing in elavil+cymbalta+interactions (or side effects) and see what you get.
Gentle Hugs to ALL!
What kind of reaction did you have, V????

I would just arm your self with the knowledge of what to watch for and what to do in the event that there is a problem.
For sleep, the doc gave me Restoril, which for me worked wonderfully; no drug hangover and I was finally getting restful sleep! (he has since changed my pain med to Opana and I can't take it any longer)
The only problem that I have experienced with Cymbalta is when I took Chantix to try to quit smoking. The doc and pharmesist both told me that there were no drug interactions, after about a week, I was in full blown depression and almost suicidal. Pfizer gave me a full refund for the Chantix.
Every med reacts differently with different people and it may not work as well for you as it does for me. Watch everything about yourself (as you should with all meds) especially your moods and your sense of awareness. I would seriously question a doc that says that you shouldn't mix them and then prescribes them for you. I just think that they DON'T know all of the interactions or the side effects and sometimes we are the lab~rats for the RX companies.
