I just talked with my daughter in law a while ago and asked what are you doing? She and my grandaughter Nicole who is in first grade are making beaded name bracelets for everychild in my grandaughters room, 21 children in all. The cost so far has been about $10.00, she thinks they might run out of vowels and have to buy another bag of the letter beads. I said what made you decide to do that? They got a letter home from the 1sr grade teacher that each child in the class is expected to buy a gift for each child in the room. She suggested that they spend $1.oo each at he Dollar Store. That is $21.00 just for that not to mention a teacher and teacher helper gift. That to me is way off base. Draw names or buy girl?boy gifts and play a game to see who gets what present. What about the kids whos parents just can't spend that kind of money? I am pretty discussed about this. That is a lot to ask of parents. What do you think?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
draw names or whatever...a present for each child is alot to ask...plus teachers and helpers..I would speak up..
If I were in that position, I would take the $$$ that I would spend on the teacher and TA gift and then buy each of the 21-$1.00 gifts.
It's just not fair to put those requirements on kids and their parents when there are some that are having enough trouble just making Christmas happen for their own kids.
I love the idea of the name bracelets. What a great alternative, plus is adds an extra personal touch, too.
Very creative!
I am glad your dil came up with a good idea though - I am sure the kids will love them. The teacher and TA should get coal - well, the teacher, anyway!
I can only see stupidity or insensitivity or both here. Go figure,
One year my daughter's class tried to do that. I went to the teacher and told her that we couldn't afford to get a present for everyone. As it was my daughter did without a present from a classmate because there was another little girl that couldn't afford even one present so the other little girl was going to have to do without. Chelsea gave her, her present so she could have one.
One for everyone is a bit much. Even if it is from the dollar store.
Take care, val
It's just ridiculous to do that to kids, especially in a public school where the students come from all walks of life.
I'd try my best if stuck in that position for my kids, but with my non-income they'd probably end up giving out candycanes.
I like how our teacher's have done it. Last year they had an ornament exchange. This year they're doing a book exchange. It has to be $3 or less & non-gender specific.
