Hi guys,
I joined this community because I highly suspect my fiance has bipolar disorder. It runs in his family and he has many of the symptoms. He has suffered from severe depression and suicidal thoughts/tendencies for many years. Unfortunately he has no health insurance, but I want to help him find a good psychiatrist and be properly diagnosed so he can start receiving treatment. We're currently separated right now and part of this is because of his current mental state. Could you guys offer me any suggestions or advice on being in a relationship with someone who is bipolar? He has such severe mood swings and during the past several months has been very mean and even verbally/emotionally abusive to me. I love him so much and want to help him. I have my own mental issues too, so this has been very difficult on our relationship. While we are apart I am going to work on my own issues, go on a higher dosage of my medication for my ocd, etc.
Can you share your stories of how your loved ones were diagnosed and what treatments worked well for them?
Thank you so much.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
As for his lack of health insurance... is he employed? Would he qualify for any state medical coverage? Is that the only thing stopping him from seeking treatment?
I would check to see if there is a community mental health clinic near you. If he can see a psychiatrist at a reduced cost, etc., there are programs to help with prescription drug coverage, and stores like Walmart and I think Target have drug programs where many prescriptions (inc. Lithium) are only $4.
I think it is very important to not only get the proper meds, but also to have a therapist to learn how to handle the diagnosis and to learn coping skills to deal with issues as they arise.
Maybe your own doctor might be aware of programs in your community.
