Having such a hard time getting head around concept of bipolar in children...I really worry about people over-pathologising (sp?) their kids..but whadda I know, right? I mean, in my own extended family there's plenty of BP1 but it came out adolescence or later..maybe that's just certain strains or sth...Guess I'll ask a pdoc..I always got impression it was a dubious & controversial diagnosis & rare..but it's so widespread all of a sudden.
I found being 'labelled' mentally ill at 17 extremely traumatic...can't imagine doing so at 7 or whatever.
BTW parents of BP munchkins...I just haven't got head round it..not hating, just saying.

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Hope you can find information on it. If I had any on this aspect of BP dx I'd share, but I only deal with an adult having the illness so it's not really my area.
Good luck.
While I don't like the idea of labelling children, not just with a MI, but with behaviour problems - in the long run maybe it does help the child, plus family have told me that my mum was never quite right growing up, she had bp then, but didn't get diagnosed until about 6 years ago. Would her life have been easier if she had been diagnosed in childhood?
I think that many ppl later dx as BP look back and realize that they had many BP symptoms even as a child, but people rarely took children to pdocs 20 years + ago, or the behavior was written off as ADHD or a phase, etc. until adolescence can along, and then it may have been written off as *puberty*
I think life, in general, is speeded up these days, with kids on computers and cell phones, video games, stressed out parents, no down time to just be a kid, not be mention the additives in our food nowadays, plus ppl are more likely to seek professional help.
All these things contribute to more and younger diagnosis.
I am not a big fan of putting very young kids on psych meds for adults. I think diet and nutrition should be addressed first, as well as family therapy, and as a last resort, minimal medication.
