Get one. Best thing you can do for yourself.

As soon as I can go places by myself I am going to get one. It is just a good idea. There are so many people that do not know anything about seizures by no fault of their own. Before I started having them I knew NOTHING about them. At this point my Fiance is always wit me when we go somewhere and he knows all of my information.

Can your nuro think straight? That comment just stuns me. We all need them. Here in Australia if your in trouble and need to be resusitated, they do so first, then look in sos for info. Mine says not to be resus, my personal belief, when God calls, well he does. Not everyone wants that and each has own rights. But a paramedic here told me to get engraved on back outside, as they will do first if needed, then worry about looking inside, but if see one, and do look, they flip it over to see if anything engraved on back first. And would follow my wishes. Guess its the same right through australia, dont know about other countries. Without one if your not with it when see Dr, how is that Dr to know if you have bad reactions to a med, your in enough trouble already. They are vital to us. And a lot of others.

I have one! That was one of the first things I did after my Epilepsy came into my life. What planet does your neuro come from? And please consider getting another neuro. If he/she doesn't see the need for a Med ID Bracelet, then I wonder if he/she doesn't see the need for thorough, quality care...

I'm going to say this: I realize that your seizures are absence seizures, but, unfortunately, that does not rule out the possibility of larger seizures in the future. You can ask many people on this site about that. The best thing you can do is wear an ID. But if you don't want a bracelet, try a necklace that you can take off when need be. They also make dog tags, which would be pretty cool to me if I was in high school.

I am required to wear an ID bracelet at the hospital for safety reasons. Yes, all the information needed is in my file, but other nurses need that information quickly if something happens.

I have one & would honestly never go anywhere without it, especially alone. I have one that is more like a charm bracelet. The info is on a heart charm with the Medical alert sign. Plus a small red alert charm so that EMTs can spot it easier. Most people would never even know what it is unless they looked or asked.

I do have to add in agreement with the other posts - where does your neuro come from? Make sure he specializes in epilepsy in order for you to get the best care. :)

okay. so just to let u all know, my neuro's specility is not epilepsy. he is a general neurologist. all the one who puts me on all my meds. (the adhd, depression, anxiety..) i have been seeing him since i was 7. hes awesome and really nice. and with my parents its also an issue with insurance, location, and price and all that stuff. i dont think they would ever consider switching. it is a part of the miami childrens hospital. the dan marino center which is in my citiy (or pretty close) i went to OT there when i was little. so basically ive been there since i was like 5. any more ?s just ask me!

I would really encourage it. For any reason if your ever injured and unable to speak this is information that is really important....there are necklaces too.

i have to have one, i am allergic to the #1 most commonly used anti-epilleptic med. dillantin. plus i have a vns so some tests are not able to be performed, if i cant tell someone and no one is there that knows me it can mean my life or big complications for me.

I have a medic alert necklace. I used to not have anything. for three years if i had a seizure, i had a siezure. my ex-wife was always there, and the people i worked with new to call her. my seizures are almost 100% controlled by meds now, thank God. I got the necklace because my job was making a big stink about me being epileptic. However, I have had seizures for 8 yrs now, I have had the same kind for 8 yrs. I know the warnings, when they are coming on. It is good you go to one doctor. He knows your medical history. He knows YOUR situtation. However, I would recomend getting one, just because not everyone knows you. Also you will be driving and going out more. It is a good idea to have one. even if it just a tag with the word epileptic, or seizures listed on it, and your allergy. It will give them a place to start. also but a contact #.

like monkey says... your seziures can evolve.. mine did.. i started with one type and now am up to five...sigh.. sorry your neuro may be a nice guy...just to stuck in his old beliefs... which is not good for you... he should be updating himself... print off some stuff from the internet for your parents to read perhaps and it may change their mind as well.. i think a site is epilepsy.com...or perhaps it is called myepilepsy.com... i will try to get you the proper link when i am back on my own pc...

in the meantime you can get a med alert necklace or bracelet at a drug store if your parents dont wish to pay for one...and have it engraved... simple and safe..but you should really have one... for your own saftey...

I see your profile says you're an athlete. That's funny, as I've given my Medic Alert necklace the nickname of my "gold medal" (even though it's not gold). A must-have because if you seize out you may not be able to talk or you may be confused for a while. I keep my necklace on whenever I leave the house. It just did the talking for me a couple of weeks ago when I had a slip and fall on the ice and had to be taken to an ER. I just pulled it off my neck, handed it to the ambulance people, and said "Call my wife and doctor, not my parents." If you've never seen one up close, it has your vital info on it--major stuff they need to know. The medicines and dosages the hospital can get when they call the MedicAlert 24-hour response center. Well worth the 35 bucks a year. I went down and read your defense of your doctor, and while he may be a perfectly great doctor, I think that we're all SURPRISED he'd say you don't need one.

Medic Alert bracelets are a great thing to have. I didn't get mine until I was 18 and I kind of regret that. If you wind up having a seizure in public they are there to inform the medics that you have a history of epilepsy and any other information that you want on there such as your name, number and any med allergies that you might have. Since you are most likely not going to be responsive when the midics arrive and not always with somebody that you know I would reccommend anybody with anytype of medical condition get one. They are very easy to find. Just search Medic alert bracelet on-line and tons of different sites will come up. You can get many different designs, just make sure that you get one with the little caduses (snake wrapped around the pole) on it so you know it is authentic.
