When the immune system responds to a foreign substance in an abnormal way, it is classified as an allergy. When the body first contacts the substance, it will not cause any reactions, but the immune system will start to produce antibodies to it and subsequent contact will trigger more dramatic responses. Depending on the allergy, the response could be mild or very severe...
I have just looked this up on the web and here's the website that explains everything, including why one side of the nose "fills up":: http://www.ent-consult.com/turbinatesurgery.html
Glad you are getting an answer to this at such a young age. Wish I'd found a doc who could have clued me in years ago.
Oh, and I will not be getting the operation my ENT suggested. Any operation has the potential to do more harm than good. However, I will continue my salt water method using a "netty pot". Check this out, it really helps clear out sinuses and must move those little cilia around in the nostril.
I had a little surgery on my nose where they made my sinuses smaller, and where they straightened my nasal septum as well.
It lasted maybe a year. Then of course the allergy shots which didn't help, and always some medications which kept on making my nose bleed. Last med I was on is called Cortisol. It took the swelling away. It worked great!! Have you tried it??
Take care, hope you feel better.
