Dyslexias include the inability to name letters, to read words or sentences, or to recognize words directly even though they can be sounded out. Dyslexia is not limited to reversing the order of letters in reading or writing; it may, for instance, include unexpected...

My son is 7 and is failing 1st grade. I believe that he has dyslexia and possibly ADD(I have ADD)and he is as scattered as I am. I told the school that I want him tested for learning disabilities but I don't want to wait for them or rely on them. I've been through this before because he had early speech delays. Preschool disabiled classes made his speech better but his behavior worse. What do I do now?

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
After that is ruled out, just knwo that there is no good one test for dyslexia. One place I think undertands dyslexics is the Davis Center out in California. Google them and they have centers all over where your son can be tested to see if he is really dyslexic. The screening is about $100-150.
Good luck!
He needs to be tested for learning disabilities by the school. If that shows that he may have an LD but they are not sure what it is then have him tested for Dyslexia. Most schools do not test for dyslexia, some schools even go so far as to say dyslexia is not real. If you have him tested for it and he has it then the tester will give you a formal write up and by law the school will have to make accommodations for him.
The behavior problems could be due to his embarrassment and/or frustration of not doing well in school. If all the test show up negative then maybe your pediatrician can write a referral to get him tested for ADD, but make sure you rule every thing else out before you do that, many schools and doctors are so ready to give a pill with out fully understanding what a child my be really struggling with.
If it is dyslexia programs like Sylvan are not good for them. There is a really great system that the school is using with my daughter called the Barton system. She has been using it for 3 months and her reading and sight word count has become very close to grade level and her behavior in class is much better because she is not so frustrated.
Brightsolutions.us and Bartonreading.com will give you all the information you need about dyslexia. Susan Barton did an inservice with my daughters school and since the school has started using it with children who are having trouble with reading they have seen a great improvement.
