Hi everybody!
I\'m new to the weight management group, but so far I like it here. :)
My question is, how accurate is the BMI? I was shocked last time I went to the doctor and learned my weight in pounds. Then I ran it through an online BMI calculator and got the bad news that I was well over the normal BMI for my age and height - well, according to some BMI calculators. Others say I\'m in normal range. Other\'s say I\'m slightly over. Well, I am losing pounds, and I\'m definitely losing inches, but the BMI is less friendly. My fiance says that a good chunk of my weight is muscle, since he swears up and down I am very strong (he says I could kick through a door pretty easily). Does the BMI take into account someone who is very muscular? Why don\'t some take into account age?
Just curious. (I\'m using my own weight loss measure: the \"Can I fit into my favorite dress\" scale.)

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
I saw on your \"My Page\" that you have been a vegetarian for quite a while now...so your boyfriend may be right when says you are probably losing muscle more than fat. I am sure you know that vegetarians have to make sure they get enough protein (which builds and maintains muscle), but I thought I would suggest you might consider up-ing your protein and do strength training along with your cardio to make sure you maintain your muscle mass :)
Good luck to you!

The BMI gives a decent snapshot of your health in relation to your weight and height, but becomes less
accurate the more muscle you have. If you are extremely
athletic and muscular with little body fat, you will
often be classified as overweight or obese, as muscle
weighs more than fat.

Thanks Romika. I am very strong and muscular (except a little pudge around the belly). I was a competitive swimmer, and I do a lot of exercises that work out my legs (I bike a lot). I mean, I remember when I was 110, and I was really sickly. I had almost no muscle. Then I started exercising again, and my weight went back up to 120, but I was still pretty slim. I've gained a lot of weight on my epilepsy medications, but I still think that a great deal of that is muscle.
OutdoorGal - I'm pretty protein-oriented. I vary my protein sources, but must have protein every meal. For breakfast I like a plain or vanilla yogurt (gives the first shot of protein of the day.) For lunch, I like something that includes a legume or bean. For dinner, a lot of TVP or tofu. Of course I do a lot of balancing with grains and vegetables for complete proteins. My fiance thinks I'm very muscular (at least in the legs)... as for losing muscle mass? Not likely. I work out my muscles pretty hard now. :)
