I don't like spiders either. When my husband and son go under the house (into a crawl space) to connect or adjust the cable television I pace until they return from under ths house having not been bitten. We live in SC where the spiders are poisonous.

I don't like snakes either ... don't get me started!

Lucky me, I live in Michigan where poisonous spiders and snakes are rare. I believe we only have one poisonous snake.
I would freak out! I left a resturant in FL because there was a spider on the wall.

Oh gross! I hate hate hate spiders... I've lived all over the place in South America and they have HUGE ugly spiders there... ugh! :(

I live in the BOONIES. So insects are just a part of life. I find spiders in my house quite a bit--they crawl up through the drain pipes that we have yet to screen (new house). I pick them up--yes with my hands--and put them outside.

No, I wouldn't do this with a poisonous spider--I'd have to use a cup or napkin to transport it. Spiders don't normally bite without agitation though. And they KILL all the other annoying insects that DO bite us actively--like mosquitos.

I always make it a point to leave them alone.

I have a black widow tattooed on my left upper thigh. It's about two inches tall. My husband hates spiders as much as the person who posted this discussion and he HATES that tattoo!! I think it's hilarious that someone be that disturbed by a bug! It's a bug people!! If it's that bothersome, then...SQUISH it's over! haha :)

Oh yeh, that's my advice. You don't need any magic potion to kill the spiders. Just squish them. Use a boot or something, it's not complicated. :D

I live in the boonies also, and I carved a pumpkin 2 days a ago. and I was just looking at where i carved the eyes out, and the pumpkin is full of spider webs. The Sad thing is the pumpkin is INSIDE my house. luckily they arn't posinous around here... lol

Rather than finding a way to eliminate these 2 spiders, why not find a way to stop fearing them. There are millions of spiders in the world and for every one you see, there are 500 you dont see. You can remove them all and there are many more in your house than you would ever imagine. No, i'm not trying to scare you, but reinforce the fact that humans and spiders can and do live with one another harmlessly. The brown recluse is very common where I live and the bite of a black widow is painful, but will not kill and adult, its rarely powerful enough to kill an animal. Fear of anything is unhealthy; I would recommend finding some type of treatment to work through this problem.

I feel very lucky that my biggest problem is crickets! They are everywhere in my house but they do not bite. They are great for fish bait!

I work in the entomology field which includes arachnids and can tell you most spiders are harmless. The spider that comes in to your home never lives long because its options for food are slim (ever notice how many dead spiders you find) - unless you have A LOT of bugs. Not knowing what you saw in your home I would have to say if one was a Black Widow it was very close to death because they do not like to be seen. BW tend to stay under eaves of homes in dark areas. The other spider you are concerned about is a Brown Recluse and they are called recluse for a reason. Again they have very little desire to be seen. You usually find BR in crawl spaces, dark damp areas where there tends to be little human traffic. BR are commonly found in older homes that have a lot of unused guest rooms etc...Attics can be great homes for all spiders but again a spider who finds himself indoors really has little time left due to the fact that the food supply is minimal. Yes from time to time they do end up out in the open but it is pretty rare and usually means they are fairly weak and close to death. Both kinds, actually most spiders avoid light, it hinders their hunting. Water will kill a spider b/c it will drown them. The best remedy is a shoe! Seriously they are not that fast and you can smack'm quicker then they can move and you never have to worry if it worked...you will have you evidence! BR are more poisonous then BW the elderly, sickly and small children are at the most risk if bitten. Also BR hurt like a bit**h and you are going to know if you get bit - I have many colleagues that have been bitten. If you get medical attention you will be fine - it won't be fun but most people live. Don't worry you are bigger then them!!

you guys crack me up- I've been bit twice by scorpions and twice by jellyfish- the jellyfish hurts a lot more. Don't more to Arizona- we are loaded w/spiders and snakes... but if you do, give me a buzz. I'm a Realtor- hahaha

And lizards too in AZ I've seen! I was visiting friends there and we went to the garage to get in the car in the morning and there was a HUGE lizard in the garage! I whigged out! LOL!

I can deal with spiders...outside they go to eat some bugs. The snake will live much longer than you think around me....cuz I'll run so fast in the other direction that there would be no harm to it. ; )

I'm with you on those jellyfish though! That hurts something fierce!

I don't mind spiders as long as they stay out of my house. I've had at least six of those big black and yellow garden spiders build webs around my house this year...those don't bother me because I know they're harmless. Black widows are uncommon in my area, the most bothersome I know to keep an eye out for is the brown recluse. I think I knocked a BW (baby male) off my ceiling the other day tho! Like I said outside, I don;t mind, but you come inside and I spot you all bets are off buddy! lol

We have 9 kinds of poisonous snakes (both land and water snakes), black, red, and gray/brown widows, brown recluses and the beautifully coloured "banana" spiders where I work.

Oh, and I also can't forget the red fire ants, stinging caterpillars, Portuguese man'o'war, jellyfish, stingrays, lizards and alligators.

I found 5 brown widows and 3 black ones in the dry storage area the other night. They are sprayed for professionally every month, but... They live here. Everywhere. You really can't get rid of them.

Our employee parking area is right next to a bayou and swamplands... Great fun in the dead of summer ;)

Nothing like walking face first into a banana spider web while coming through the parking garage or the tree lines walkways. Or finding a snake or two under your car. Or watching an alligator chomp a bird or turtle for dinner. (don't go swimming in waters you don't know here and pay attention if you do). We had a gator on the highway a few weeks ago.

After Hurricane Gustav, I went swimming in the Gulf... For a few minutes. Apparently the hurricane washed a mess of jellyfish up to the shallow swimming areas. People ran out of the water like crazy because they were getting stung by 3 and 4 foot long dead jelly tentacles. Up went the yellow and purple flags and beach was closed.

I don't particularly like spiders (I'll still let out a little scream when one startles me, yet I find them fascinating to watch at the same time), but I try to just ignore them and hope they eat the bird sized mosquitoes before I have to squish the spider with my shoe.
