Type 2 Diabetes is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not make efficient use of it. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert food into glucose, a sugar that the body uses for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose can accumulate in the blood, and can cause serious health problems such as heart disease and strokes and organ damage...

My husband was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He spent 3 days in the hospital. When I got him to the hospital his reading was 597. If he would have waited much longer he would have gone into a coma and probably died.
We have never thought of diabetes because he's blood sugars always checked out OK and he's not overweight. The doctors don't know why this came on so fast. We can home with a meter, strips and a prescription for insulin. The hospital show us how to use everything but this was so scary for us. He has to have a shot of insulin 4 times a day. I'm learning to cook a new way now but confused at how many carbs he can have at a meal. I have lots of literature I came home from the hospital with but they don't state how big of a portion we can have. I got a cook book and it states how many carbs, fats ,etc.
Do any of you have any suggestions of a good book and a good cookbook.
I forgot to mention that he has been a smoker for over 40 years. He is quiting now and is on day 2. I pray he gives them up. I'm on the smoking community for I quit 8 months ago. Any help from any of you will be great. This is really frighting.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

You may want to see about having your DH see an Internist or Endocrinologist then scheduling an appointment with a Diabetes Educator (nutritionist).
Lots of hospitals have Diabetes education classes so you can learn about different things.
Also, watch for Diabetes Expos. In Minneapolis, MN, each fall they have a Diabetes expo which is a great opportunity to speak with different Drs., Sales Reps, Drug Reps. and get good general information about healthcare for individuals with Diabetes. Often they also offer educational seminars as well.
