I've suffered from clinical depression for as long as I can remember. The only time I can ever remember feeling "good" was when I was taking 40 mg of Paxil everyday. Unfortunately, I had sexual side effects from the Paxil so I decided to stop taking it. My psychiatrist put me on Wellbutrin because it has the lowest occurance of sexual side effects.
I've been taking Wellbutrin for 3-4 years now. Recently my Therapist (different person) told me that in addition to Depression I exhibited symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder. A couple weeks after that I mentioned that I was taking Wellbutrin and she seemed disturbed by that. She told me that Wellbutrin has been know to trigger Anxiety in people.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had these types of experiences. Any suggestions? I'm seeing my Psychiatrist again on Monday and will discuss with her, but I wonder what some of you with first hand experience might have to say about this.

Today is my 25th birthday, to my somewhat lack of surprise I can see already no one really seems to care. I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
Thanks for the input.
However, my therapist did, specifically say "social anxiety disorder" and that's why she was surprised my psychiatrist would put me on Wellbutrin.
I really apprecaite all the feedback. I met with my Psychiatrist but she didn't seem to want to take any immediate action. She and my Therapist are going to talk and we'll see where that leads us.
"SCORPIOCA", I'm male so the sexual side effects I had with Paxil are fairly obvious. I couldn't maintain an erection, or achieve orgasm. That's why I switched to the Wellbutrin. That problem went away with the Wellbutrin but now that I've read your post, I'd have to agree that my sex drive has decreased considerably. It's been well over a year. I attributed it to the depression and the fact that the Wellbutrin doesn't do as much for me as the paxil did with regard to Depression.
My psychiatrist actually said that Wellbutrin doesn't really effect Social Anxiety, but that it has been known to trigger anxiety in general. I'm not really sure I believe her but I guess she should know.
I'm fortunate in that my anxiety comes and goes. I'm definitely very anxious in social situations where I am expected to "mingle" with people I don't know. I'm really bad at small talk and starting conversations, but I have no problem talking to people when they start the conversation. Also, I don't have a problem when I'm at work. In fact, I'm giving a presentation on Thursday and I'm not worried about it at all.
For me anxiety seems very much to stem from general "fear of the unknown". Like when I go to Doctors appointments, or someplace I've never been, or the DMV. I get really anxious to the point of being sick to my stomach when I travel. It starts when I wake up and it lasts until I'm actually ON the plane. Send me to a party or other type of social even with people I don't know? FORET IT. I really hate it, but I don't know how to prevent it.
My thoughts are that a theripist is not a psychiatrist. Their educational background is very different...
A therapist is not trained as a doctor, a psychiatrist who disperses medication is.
It is NOT common for someone to have new side effects to a medication they have been on for a long time. Hence, your psychiatrist is right when the meeting of mind needs to take place for your best interest.
Although side effects of medication are common (especially depression medication), my bet is that something else is taking place.
The change could be physical or emotional.
I have more anxiety now than I have had for years, but I know it is not because of anything other than situational circumstances. I had anxiety which kept me from coping, and that got better although I kept taking the same amount of Wellbutrin. It has been at least 5 years since I have been on Wellbutrin.
My depression has recently gotten much worse. Increasing my anxiety medication has been helping my more than anything, and it was the medication I was able to cut back on when I began to feel better 1 1/2 years ago.
My situation may not apply to everyone, but I know there is a huge difference betweem a therapist and a psychiatrist.
Point: a therapist once told my that she thought my depression was due to my childhood because of the way I drank out of my water bottle. My psychiatrist has been my lifesaver, and I have changed therapists 3 times. I now only see my psychiatrist who also gives me therapy (thats called psychoanalisy)
It works for me.
