Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

This is how my significant other thinks. Does anyone else have this problem? Someone important in your life simply in denial/doesn't believe depression is a real illness and that you're "choosing" to be sad?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. My opinion is that I forgive him. I don't think he is small minded, he, in fact, is quite intelligent. I just think that some people simply cannot understand it as a real illness because its not something they can see, i.e. a broken leg. He's never experienced mental illness or seen it until he met me.
I just have not found a way yet, and honestly don't know if I ever will, to make him understand.
I would make depression go away if I could.
Thank you guys for your input and support.
Does anyone have an idea(s) for effectively helping someone to understand depression is "real"?
