Labor Day was first celebrated in the USA on September 5th, 1882 in New York. It was sponsored by the Knights of Labor, the first important labor organizaion of skilled and unskilled workers. They had 700,00 members by 1886. It is a day to celebrate the American Worker and often seen as the last chance to have barbeques, go to the beach and also signifies the beginning of the football season.
