I now a symptom of depression is either sleeping all the time or not being able to sleep much. I understand why someone would sleep all the time, because they feel tired and lousy. but what about not being able to sleep, why cant you sleep?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. Nerve cells, called neurons, release chemical substances that either excite or inhibit a certain other cell it is targeting. That is what, in the case of moods, causes us to either get exicited about Christmas, or dread it.
The chemical substances released by the neurons are called neurotransmitters. Two of those are noripinephrine and serotinin. Those are the two most thought to be involved with depression and other mood disorders.
There are several possible reasons for these substances not to be available enough or to be too available to the neurons and their target cells.
That is why there are several different kinds of antidepressants, and several opposing symptoms possible, like sleeplessness/too much sleep, weight gain or weight loss, exhaustion, or inability to relax.
