Why do we do it?
if our lives are awful enough that we are miserable, we choose instead of saying 'my life is crap' or 'i'm being treated in a way that's unacceptable to me' we go for the easiest answer. They do it because I deserve it, I am worthless, I am rubbish, kick me to the kerb.
