Hi, I just joined this site. I'm 54 years old, a freelance editor and musician. I live in New York state, near Woodstock, about 2 miles north of the city.
I have had treatment-resistant depression for many years. Medications, and believe me I've tried most of them, don't work for me. I've also had shock therapy several times, and the most recent time, in July, helped me for less than a month. Hardly seemed worth the month I spent in the hospital.
I really feel like I'm running out of options. My wife of 10 years left me 16 months ago because she couldn't handle my depression anymore. I think about her frequently. I guess I'm not over her. Tell you the truth, sometimes I feel if it weren't for my cats, I wouldn't be here today. I haven't gotten up in the morning (actually afternoon) in a decent mood in many months.
Wish I had better news to share. I'm not sure what category to place this in, if I want to start a discussion or ask for advice.
Thanks for listening.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
There are additional treatments that you can seek out. Much of Western medicine is incorporating "mindfulness" into their practices. This can provide additional coping skills. Therapy, anger management, cognitive behaviour therapy, biofeedback can also teach excellent coping skills.
It is possible to improve and over time.
Some times there are other issues that can complicate the matter. In my case it is a sleep disorder and constant pain.
Addressing those side issues can be helpful as well.
