Depression Support Group
Depression is a real and debilitating condition that is often misunderstood by family and friends. Its meaning can range from a prolonged period of sadness to an actual mental illness with specific symptoms. Find and share experiences with others who are going through the same struggles.

I just watched a Nova show on epigenetics. They said that rats whose mothers were "low lickers", not nurturing, were depressed, nervous, etc. I don't know how they know a rat is depressed but that's what they said. It was in the genes because they switched babies to control for that.
Just wondering. The people on ds... were your mothers nurturing? Neglectful? Touchy, feely? My mother was neglectful and I have high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression. Diabetes was also part of it. Just wondering...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I have friends who are depressed and are at the other end of the spectrum in terms of cathexis and mother's treatment towards the child.
Epigenetics (epi is greek for "over") relates to those protein molecules that can litterally work on a single section of a chromosome gene. The "low lickers" i.e., the rats were someone singled out as you mentioned T and because our gene expression is not that far removed from other mammals (chimps are 98% related genetically to humans) there is a correlation re: nuture vs: nature.
In short, the way an offspring (born or unborn) receives nurturning will determine how well the offspring will be able to deal with stress. Understanding how the envirionment shapes genetics was proven by studying pairs of identical twins in Spain. The younger twins would show very similar gene expression and the older twins showed almost very little.
Pretty cool science if you ask me and it does support the theory of how cells hold onto memory and how thoughts can effect cells. Read Bruce Lipton's: Biology of Belief or Louise L. Hays: You Can Heal Your Life. The former is based in hard science, the other not, but I like both for the simple reason that science can not explain it all and faith certainly plays a role in who we are.
