(I posted this on the ADHD board as well, but I know some people here medicate for ADHD....I'm really upset and looking for some insight)

My eleven year old son has been taking 40mg Vyvanse for a year now, for ADHD. Today we spent the entire day at the hospital, where he is apparently now the record-breaking youngest patient with kidney stones.

For anyone who doesn't know, kidney stones in children are uncommon, and the fact that neither his father nor I have any family history, leads me to believe the medication may play a role in this. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had any similar issues?

I'm following up next week with a urologist, which will hopefully shed some more light on the issue. But if this is medication related I'm going to be very upset....I struggled for so long with my decision to finally break down and try him on meds. He's doing so well in school now, but at what expense, his health? Just doesn't seem worth it...

I don't know but I'll bet if you google the med you could find out if it's a common side effect. Hope your boy feels better soon

I have been an RN for nearly 30 years and have never heard of someone that young with kidney stones! The poor kid, they are SOOOO painful! Here is an article about common types of kidney stones and their causes:

Hope it helps some. Please don't beat yourself up if it does end up being caused by the meds. You may have struggled with your decision, but how were you to know this would happen? Hang in there hon. Hugs for both you, and your boy!!

Thank you guys, truly. I have spent nearly an hour and a half pouring over everything on the internet related to children/kidney stones/medication. Seems it is a possibility, but the urologist is obviously the logical next step.

And of course I didn't know, or I'd have never made the choice in the first place. I just hate pills. These drugs are all relatively new and there can't be significant long-term studies on side effects. Blah.

You did what you thought was the best thing for him. Even if it was the meds that caused it, no way is it your fault at all hun. Not one bit xx

I am sorry that he is in pain with the kidney stones, I know that they are VERY painful, but hopefully the urologist will shed some light on the situation...

Hey........ I agree with everyone here.. Please please don't beat yourself up about this. I am just so so sorry your son got the kidney stones.... I have had them and I KNOW how terribly painful it is. Are the docs waiting to see if he will pass them? Bless his heart......

Thank you guys, I'm trying not to beat myself up, but it's really a huge responsibly to have someone's health at your mercy. I don't know how else to explain it....

We were given a filter for him to urinate through, the ER doc predicted he'll pass them over the course of the weekend. I have never had kidney stones, but I suspect giving a prescription for an eleven year old for 7.5 Lortab is a pretty good indication as to how much pain he's expected to be in :(

Once the stones pass, I'll take them to the urologist to have them analyzed.

take it slow with the doctor, but make him explain the side effects, and anything else that could have caused the stones.

Freccles. if this is any help at all.. my husband had a pretty big kidney stone about 6 months ago and he was give the same thing.. the little filter cup thing. I thought he would be in really bad pain when he passed it. but the thing is, I was told the most pain is caused when the stone/stones aren't moving.. but when they are ' stuck'.... my husband had NO pain when he passed the stone.. he just peed and there it was! I hope that makes you feel alittle better.. but I know you are mom...... and I know it worries you....... keeping your little man in my prayers that he isn't in much pain and he does pass the stones soon........

Holy moley frecclie,, I've never even heard of the med, my youngest has adhd. No way for you to know that because you've not have chanced it. Hugs hon

This is so not your fault. You wanted him to have some relief from ADHD, which can be so hard to deal with. You acted out of love and concern. There's no way to tell with medications, they affect people differently. But you did what you thought was best for your son, and that's what anybody would have done.

Wishing peace of mind for you, and comfort for your son. 7.5 lortabs...holy crap! Poor guy :(

jenn, sorry im shit for support right know but dont let the mother guilt get to you. its hit or miss with the meds....all the docs can do is make educated guesses.

    I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

    I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
