A friend and I are disagreeing on whether or not a computer could be programmed to be depressed.
We left off at "the computer would feel depressed if we programmed it to think about X."

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

The second thing required which is no small task- is a compiler that is capable of optimizing itself. Sounds simple right? WRONG! You try writing one... it has to figure out, on its own... how to structure information flow more efficiently... From there... it's anyones guess.
In order for it to be depressed- it must have a concept of self... some concept of self... even a basic one.... it doesn't. Good luck on this lofty goal though.
For example, if we program a computer to think about everything bad, horrible, terrible and fear producing in the world. the machine would like experience depression. If we program the machine to see that it will never think of anything else ever again, only those types of thoughts, that the machine would feel hopeless and shut it self off.
