Is Anyone here battling alcoholism and depression. Do I drink because I'm depressed or am I depressed because I drink? Anyone else battling both of these diseases?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Yes, Yes, and Yes...
I use to drink to "ease" my pains...What I got was more depressed, and the cycle started over...
Which is why i had to stop drinking, typically they do go hand in hand!
drinking doesn't make things better - with or without depression
I learned that emotional withdrawal symptoms last up to 18 months after you quit drinking. One of those can be depression. If you have been depressed without drinking for a year or two, it could be depression. If you're drinking continuously without stopping, the alcoholism would probably be the first concern.
I'm a habitual coffee addict. Sounds funny, but it can be kind of serious. I drink like 5-6 cups a day sometimes. I do it to make myself feel awake and elevate my mood. I'm medicating for depression, and I know it.
Having both alcohol and depression sucks, though. Because alcohol slows your body down, and so does depression, so it makes the "coming down" even more depressing...just something to think about. Basically, I think your depression would improve a lot if you stopped drinking, but that's really hard to do.
I grew up in a family with alcoholism :-/
