My mother has been diagnosed with mixed dementia (alzheiemers and vascular dementia). In December she was living at my sister's but suddenly became completely incoherent and anxious. Worked up and no stroke or other cause. Moved her to a memory care center. In a week or so she became suddenty delusional. She was convinced she had murdered someone in our family (no one is missing, don't worry) and tried to kill herself. We got her on zyprexa (sp?) and she stabilized a bit but in a few months was so anxious she couldn't sit still, and she was laying on the floor a lot. So we decided to send her to a specialty geriatric psych hospital to see if they could get her feeling less anxious. She was there for 3 weeks. They changed all her meds and she was less anxious. We moved her to a different memory care center that we thought might be better, but in a few days she was just as anxious, and she started falling, and over the course of two or three days went from being able to converse to being completely incoherent. Last night they called my sister -- she was trying to attack other residents with a pair of scissors and a fire extinquisher. They sent her to the hospital with a sherriff. My sister has been there all night because if she leaves they will put her in restraints. My mother thinks everyone who touches her (like trying to move the blankets) is causing her great pain and trying to kill her. I am at wits end. I'm far away, don't know what to do now. Again they have worked everything up and found no cause for a sudden change. What should I do now? What happens to dementia victims who are so psychotic and violent? I don't know what to do. Thank you for any ideas.
