Has anyone had any experience having a filter inserted into your inferior vena cava as a protection against blood clots in your leg? I had one inserted while I was in the hospital, and got a call earlier this week about scheduling an appointment to have it removed. At this point we have no idea why I developed PE and DVT in the hospital, and my hematologist can't test for blood clotting issues until I'm off Coumadin for a week or two. He wants me on Coumadin for 9 months, so it will be awhile before we can address that medical issue. The woman who called me basically said that if they don't remove the filter in March or April it will become a permanent part of my body. Given that I don't know why I developed all the blood clots in the first place, my preference is to keep the filter in place, even if it becomes a permanent fixture. I've called my hematologist and am waiting for his response, but wanted to check with this group to see what other people have done. Is it a problem to keep the filter in permanently? Thanks.
