today i saw my consultant at hospital,thinking i was having blood tests taken for genetic disorders as we arranged on the phone.when i got there and asked about them he said he would have to find out what tests are done nowadays,so we couldnt do them today??surely he should know?he felt my calf (the clot was in my pelvic area) and said the clot had gone and i could come off warfarin.i said could i have a scan and he said no.i said in that case i wanted to stay on warfarin longer as im not convinced the clot has gone and he said if i got another DVT i would be on warfarin for life.i said i didnt want another and he told me they are not life threatening???he still doesnt think my clot was caused by the pill and said for 90percent of people they never do find a cause.is it just me over reacting or is this man a complete idiot?do you think i should write a letter of complaint to the hospital?i took a day off work thinking i was going to have these blood tests done and it was a total waste of time going there

What is he? A GP, Emerg Dr., hematologist or ...?
Go over his head and DEMAND why this person is still practicing!!!
Blood clot not life threatening!!!
I'm sorry, but too many medical practitioners are responsible for the high fatality count due to DVT complications, we don't need to add to that, let's educate ourselves and when instances like this happen, let's also educate the medical community!!!

Go for his juglar. I am so tired of people telling us we are over-reacting. Let them trade places with us for a day and see if we are over-reacting!!!! Go DERO!!!!

I think that this is rediculous! You most definately need the genetic tests done so you can plan for your future and know precautions you may have to take. Most doctors i talk to when they found out I had a clot ask me first "were you on birth control?" obviously they ask bc im young and healthy...this doesnt just happen. I admit that some people never find the cause of their blood clot, but chances are if you do not have a genetic issue, or anything then the pill did it. This guy seems to be uneducated in my opinion... hes dealing with lives you have the right to demand a final scan b4 coming off of coumadin, and if hes so smart.. and the pill didnt cause your clot he should be looking for where it came from... jeez im sorry you have to deal with this!!!

But, I'm sure that the pill is NOT the reason I have had a clot...Yes I'm joking, I'm one of those that failed miserably on all genetic tests, so I'm in the Idiopathic category...

One must keep their sense of humour throughout this whole ordeal.
I'm not looking anymore for that reason, I'm just happy that I'm alive and walking and MAYBE this summer I will go back to my "normal way of life" I hope.

No, it is not you. I usually don't talk like this but you are right - that man is a complete idiot!!!!!

I didn't look to see your age but my hematologist tested me for clotting disorders right away. He said usually when you see someone young like this (I am 42 - so it was flattering) with a dVT there has to be a reason. I was pregnant too but he still looked for another reason.

I have found since my experience most doctors are not that experienced in this area and need to be educated.

For instance, my OB?GYN wanted me to get a CT scan while I was pregnant to rule out a PE. Meanwhile treatment is the same whether I have one or not. She meant well and I like her alot but another doctor at her practice was the one who misdiagnosed my DVT to begin with.

Go see a hematologiest. Make sure they are willing to test you. You should know why there is a cuase. I don't think the pill would cause a clot in someone without a clotting disorder.

You're definitely not overreacting. I have definitely learned through my ordeal that we need to remember that these doctors are working for US and not the other way around. I was at the doctor the afternoon before I threw massive clots to my lungs, and he told me I definitely didn't have a blood clot in my leg, and I was in the ER only 3 hours before the clots to my lungs and that doctor refused to do anything for me as well. Well, because of the incompetance of two different doctors, I nearly died! A large percentage of PE's are caused by pelvic clots, so you are well within your right to ask to be rescanned. I feel terrible for you going through that with the doctor, and I'm FURIOUS over the apparent lack of responsibility that many doctors feel in regard to DVTs.

I hope things go well for you and that you get the testing you need.

i dont know if you will believe this or not,but i just got a letter from this idiot consultant.it says further to my visit yesterday etc etc,he doesnt feel a scan would be beneficial as the results of a clot are visible for many months after and wont actually prove if its gone or not.is this right?he is writing to my GP to tell him i refuse to come off warfarin!!and that clotting disorders are very uncommon??what on earth should i do?

P.S. i have just read the letter again and it says a scan of my LEG would not be beneficial,but the clot was in my pelvic area about 3 inches above my groin??though it was blocked right down to below my calf.and yesterday he said something about the clot in my groin.maybe he is confusing me with someone else

Your "DVT consultant" should be tarred and feathered. Hopefully, your GP is smarter than him and knows your case extensively. If he doesn't, fire him (I fired mine and got one Much better). They work for us, and in the end, it's the medical evidence that determines the treatment.
I asked for an ultrasound when I came off coumadin for my peace of mind and my hemotologist was fine with it.
I was also on BCP when I had my DVTs and I have Factor V. But like Dero, even with a dianosis, you just gotta be thankful every day and keep on going.

I think he is an IDIOT! My female parent died of a blood clot to the lung. Please do what dero said. Please take care of yourself. I will send my good thoughts to you. Pepper

Seriously, this consultant makes no sense. I had a major DVT which started in my pelvis and extended all the way to my ankle. I was always told from the beginning that due to the clot's size I would be on warfarin at least a year. I was diagnosed beginning of September. I am scheduled for another ultrasound of my leg in January to see what improvement has been made. So I don't understand saying that another scan is of no use, obviously they will be able to see whether blood is flowing or not! Please find a good doctor who actually cares about your well-being. And don't give up, even if you have to fight for it. We know our bodies, and sometimes we have to trust our own judgement.

I don't have anything scientific to add to the other comments, but I do want to express my sympathy. Trust your gut and keep asking questions! Don't be afraid to advocate on your own behalf. Good luck!

    I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things.
