Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. I've just spent the past 3 days with my girl friend, and I think she's a codependant but I don't know how to tell her. I don't think she knows what a codependant is, and I don't know how to explain it.
About a month ago she had a falling out with her ex-boyfriend who she is still in love with. She's taking it really hard and I don't know what to do. She's really depressed, and skipping work and class. She keeps calling me because she doesn't feel like being alone, but she keeps saying she doesn't want to be around people either. When we're together she's really quiet or she cries. I don't know what to say or do to help her. I'm trying to just be there for her, but it's hard when I can't really understand what she's going through. I tried to get her to go to a CODA meeting with me once, but she refused. I think it would really help her if she went though.
Her boyfriend is a real jerk, he's hurt her lots and she still misses him. He's a sex addict and he mentally and emotionally abuses her. She also keeps saying that she misses his 3 year old son who she's only met once.
I just don't understand and I don't know what to do. I need help. It's upsetting to see her in so much pain.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
STAY STRONG.
The next time i see her I'm definitely going to try to get her to try some Rescue Remedy. I didn't even think of it, but it's a great idea.
I guess I'm looking for the right sort of things to say and do to help her as a friend. I've never had a friend get this messed up over a breakup. I don't know how to talk to her about codependency. Some of the things she says are alarming.
