Cirrhosis Support Group
Cirrhosis is a consequence of chronic liver disease, most commonly caused by alcoholism and hepatitis C. Ascites is the most common complication of cirrhosis and is associated with a poor quality of life, increased risk of infections, and a poor long term outcome. Liver damage from cirrhosis cannot be reversed, but treatment can stop or delay further progression and...
I don't want to come off as a know-it-all type, but i was an RN in critical care and the OR for almost 30 years.
The only reasons that I can think of are 1) a bad infection at the tap sites or even internally (peritonitis) 2) a large mass or tumor that could be punctured by the needle 3) hyper-distended colon (balooning of the large intestine 4) internal bleeding and the increase in intra abdominal pressure increase is keeping the bleeding in check- this is far-fetched. The last three would most likley result in emergency surgery. Last thing...does she have a living will or directive that won't allow it?
The best thing for you to do is ask the Drs. don't be afraid if you don't understand why they do what they do....but ask.
I am fairly positive that they would not withold treatment if she was dying.
Have faith in your Higher Power and convince her of the same.
God bless you both

I do rely on my faith and if its time then I have to accept this. Its just that I feel like we still need to get her to another Dr in the transplant facility that is as up to date as possible on things. That is not what has happened. The one time we did get her to their ER, they did not feel like they needed to admit her. She went home and in 2 days is in crisis mode again.
I think that the only thing left in my ability to at this point is to go get a non emergency transport to take her back to Emory. I am just afraid they may not keep her again. If you were to see her, you would pretty much be throwing in the towel on giving her a chance to make it.
She recently did an advance directive, etc. abut do not know if she got anything notarized yet. The Rehab facility should have someoone that can do that for her but I have almost lost my faith in everyone involved in her care.
You guys have been wonderful and I appreciate the kindness and understanding you have shown to complete strangers.
I lost my other sister to a fatal heart attack in 2/07 and I am not ready to lose my only other sibling just yet. However, I know its not up to me how things go. I am the baby but somehow I ended up being the one that takes care of everything and tries to fix it.
Well, that is stuff for yet another group, right:) ??
Thanks again and my God bless all of you.
