My husband was finally diagnosed with cirrhosis after 8 months of being sick and no one telling us what was wrong. He had been experiencing dementia like symptoms for months. All test were showing no signs of dementia or stroke. After spending 3 days with my husband not being able to find the bathroom or put his cloths on we went to the ER and finally they tested him for high ammonia levels in the blood. We then found out that he has cirrhosis. He has to take lactulose twice a day, but he hates the taste. It is a daily struggle. Last night, I found that he was pouring his lactulose into the Dawn detergent bottle. I can tell when his ammonia levels are up, but it is obvious now that I need to administer his medicine. He is only 47 and I teach full time. Any suggestions from other caregivers? I can really use some help.
