My husband is a very large man. He has been unable to walk without screaming pain and legs giving out in about 5 ft for years. He was a traffic officer in his younger days and had been hit in the knees and legs multiple times with no breaks. Now in his eaarly 50's, the orthopedic said he needs his knees replaced but he is too big to be a candidate. Because this will be a chronic problem, the ortho refuses to give him anything for pain.(there is absolutely no cartiledge in either knee)
The pain clinic had to have a referral from the DR., then ordered a drug screen, then at the last minute called the Dr. and said they could not treat him because he was too heavy and that contributed to the problem or some such bologney.
Has anyone ever been denied service based on size? Is there really a legitimate medical reason that weight (from a wheelchair) could keep pain management from working? I' just about fed up with the discrimination and am ready to make some noise.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
The pain foundation might have an answer as well.
I am so busy tomorrow we are away, but will make inquiries when i can.
Best wishes

How do they expect someone to lose weight that has disabling pain?
Can you go to another doctor for a second opinion? It seems like too many innocent people are getting hurt by those who must be abusing the system and abusing pain management, and I'm sorry your husband is caught in this kind of heartless system.
I would make some noise. The situation isn't right and your husband is in pain.
And if they are going to use that as some kind of BS excuse, you'd think they'd at least give him a referral to a dietitian to cover their asses.
Also, giving him adequate pain control would allow him to be more active, and perhaps participate in a swimming pool program where there isn't any pressure on his knees.
It sounds like this pain clinic is a bunch of charlatans, but is there any way you could speak with your Doctor, and say that he's willing to participate in the both the above if he gets started on pain control?

It's worth a shot to ask them for this help.
