It does not seem to be usually used for a pain med. It was orginnally used as a med for epilepsy I believe.
It is an anti-epileptic. Also used for migraines. Also used as a mood stabilizer. Also used to treat eating disorders. Also used to treat neuropathy/RSD/certain kinds of pain.
For pain it only has an FDA indication when used for neuropathic pain related to diabetic neuropathy. In those studies doses of 100-200 mg a day are used. For seizure disorders the maximum dose is 1600 mg/day in adults
