Hi all!
Just wanted to ask a wee question. On Wednesday my doctor (GP) put me on Amitriptyline (25mg) for the pain in my leg/hip/back. I was told it was primarily used as an anti depressant but at this dose can act as a pain killer.
Have any of you ever had this for pain before? Do you think it works?? So far it doesnt seem to be working, though it may be too soon to tell.
I feel SOOOO drousy all the time (ive been in bed since Wed night!). Is the drousyness just a temporary thing for the first week or so or is it there constantly? I dont think i will be able to handle it if its there constantly ..I need to work!
Any advice you have i would really appreciate. Thanks very much! :) Happy Weekend to you all.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

In the end, it really wasn't the right approach for me....the doctors put me on this medication near the beginning of my chronic pain path when all I was only asking for a physiotherapy referral!! (I am in the military so physiotherapy has to be referred by a doctor). So my experience may be different from others. Be careful with doctors and chronic pain, sometimes they just want to throw pills at you to make you "go away".
I never did get over the drowsiness, it pretty much lasted the entire time I was on the medication. I started with 25mg and by the end I was up to 75mg (because I guess they thought the dosage was not high enough for the pain) and the drowsiness only got worse and worse. I was like a Zombie.
Give it a little while to see if your sleepiness lifts, a couple of weeks or so, if not the doctors may have to try something else.
I do have to say that every so often amitriptyline is okay just to get to sleep.... but as for a preventative treatment for chronic pain, it didn't seem to do the trick for me.
I hope it works better for you than for me and I hope that your drowsiness does lift. If it doesn't DO NOT hesitate to tell your doctor. Don't be silly like me and put up with the drowsiness and the side effects for 8 months if they are making you miserable. There are lots of other meds and therapies, if this doesn't fit for you make your doctor do his/her job and find something that does work!
Again though I do want to stress that this is my experience.... I so hope that this works for and your side effects lift. I know that this medication can be helpful for so many.
Then about a year ago I had trouble sleeping and was put back on it. It has been a life saver for me. I take 50 mg at bedtime.
The hangover effects went away for me after a couple of weeks but if I miss a couple of doses I can tell a big differnce when I start back on it.
I hope you all have a beautiful Sunday xxoxxx
