Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) Support Group
Chronic myelogenous leukemia affecst the balance of blood cells in the body, disrupting the normal balance. The cancer cells eventually begin to outnumber and push out the good cells, and could lead to anemia and easier bleeding/bruising. If you or a loved one is diagnosed with CML, this is the community to discuss your experience.

My mum has had CML for nearly 4 years now and when the doctors first diagnosed her they put her on gleevac as a trail drug and so far so good..she is in remission and only has to see her specialist every 6 months now which is great it has done so much for her giving her life that perhaps she may not have had before.. as far as im concerned nothing has happened no reactions apart from the positive reactions! However the doctors are talking about using her as a 'guinine pig' in a new trail...about now because she has been on gleevac for soo long to take her off it and see if it has stopped the cancer from growing and monitor her, however there are high chances that she could come out of remission and not ever be able to get back into remission and this is what scares me..i dont want her to do it but she is considering it if its going to help save others how come i get it acrossed to her that her life is important too and we dont want to loose her?..also can anyone tell me does exssessive amounts of alochol affect how gleevac works??

Hi, I have wondered too, how alcohol works with Gleevec, since Gleevec is hard on the liver,I am sure alcohol would not be good in combination, but i like my margaritas, so I have always wondered if I should be drinking them, axnious for some answers. Blondina

How many milligrams per day was mom taking to get to remission? I was almost there. I started out at 400 and they switched me to 800 because my numbers started to creep back up. Haven't been back yet to see if it is working. She should keep taking her Gleevec. You are right, her life is important and it is hard to get to remission. How old is she? By the way, my doc said it is fine for me to keep drinking my beer along with the Gleevec.

I am presently on the same situation, because of my remission and because my last 2 test of FISH and PCR are negative I am seriously thinking about stopping Gleevec. My Oncologist believe that even if your WBC count becomes abnormal, taking Gleevec again put it back to normal. Still she is not sure and I am trying to get more info before I stop it altogether.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
