Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) describes a sense of exhaustion and post-exertion malaise, even when you have gotten enough rest and sleep. The disease is characterized by six months of incapacitating fatigue experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina, and problems with concentration and short-term memory. The cause is unknown, but it is a...

Hello everyone.
Has anyone tried - or know anyone who has tried - Reverse Therapy? It's going to sound controversial but the system is based on the principle that the symptoms you experience with CFS are 'messages' that you need to listen to ie they may be telling you to make changes in your life / speak up for yourself / be nicer to yourself. It sounds simplistic (slightly loopy?) I know but it rings bells for me personally because I am sure my depression/ CFS symptoms are linked. The times I have felt most well, I have also been stronger 'mentally' and vice versa. They aren't saying that the condition is 'in the mind' - they believe it's a physical condition but caused by unresolved emotional issues (I think). It's undergoing clinical trials at the moment apparently. It's based in the UK and there's a website you can go on - it's pretty easy to find.
Apologies to anyone in the '25 per cent' group/ ME camp who I can understand may be offended at the suggestion that they can control how they feel.
Any thoughts? I'm willing to try anything.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...

I will let you know how I go with this. Some people have amazing 'cures', for others it is a slow movement into a normal life.
My understanding is that it isn't hailed as a cure for ME/CFS but that it can help improve things. Fantail has described the principles of the therapy so well already.
One person I know of who underwent Reverse Therapy travelled a long way to find a therapist, in Liverpool, that she felt was 'good'. She says that it was very expensive as she had to go to a number of sessions. However, though still very much having ME/CFS it has, she says, raised her percentage in the ability range up a notch or two and has enablled her to attend College (which she wasn't able to do at all beforehand).
The other person went to a few sessions with a therapist in Shrewsbury and found neither the therapist or the therapy any help at all. It just left her disalusioned and with a big hole in her pocket.
I looked into downloading the book too but was able to buy a secondhand copy quite cheaply on Amazon. The principles of the therapy does seem to make sense to me but I think, as with all types of therapy, it may only be as good as the therapist and your relationship with them. I have heard of someone who followed what was recommended in the book and decided to 'help-yourself'. Unfortunately we have lost touch and I don't know how successful that was for her.
We are all different and you need to do what feels right for you. Please let us know how you get on if you decide to follow this route. xoxo
However I could not have done this in the first few years I had CFS/ME as simply getting out of the house to go to the doctors was out of the question at times.
This website gives the details on how the therapy is done. And I was thinking about doing this myself at home. It's just writing down your feelings / thoughts and working through them. Just an idea for those who are housebound or can't afford a therapist. Marcia
