I have seen articles that say that over time, CFS causes brain damage. Is this true? If so, what kind? Has anyone else heard of this? I'm alarmed.

Alexandra, I've never heard of actual brain damage due to CFIDS/ME. We do lose clarity and ability to concentrate. Maybe that's what you are referring to. A lot of my friends, including me used to have jobs with high level mental skills required. Now, we are unable to think long and hard any more. It takes too much energy. That is the loss we take in our heads. As far as actual physical brain damage, nope, don't think so. Maybe someone else will have a different take on this. We shall see. My brain is on vacation right now!

I read that CFS patients have more white spots of signal abnormality on the brain and my MRI did reveal that I had white spots of signal abnormality. My brain fog seems to be lifting since I have been getting better but I'm still not 100%. I am hoping for a full recovery but I think I'll always have a little bit of the foggy brain stuff going on.

There's a substantive amount of research on CFIDS and brain damage. Yes, there's research. Yes, it does happen. Just google away!!!!!!!!!!!

Listen sweetie - I know that the more we know the more we can fight - but I also know, sometimes the more we know the quicker we give up. Does CFS cause brain-damage? I don't know, and until there is a cure, I don't want to know... because it is just one more fear to have pulling me down. My personal hope is the fog will competely lift some day,and I will be a brilliant as ever!!! Ha! Ha!I don't worry about white spots on my brain because there is nothing I can do about it at this time. Taking on additional worry and stress will not help of that we can be sure.

Agreed, Grandma .... that's just one less thing I can control. I would have to cast a vote that it probably does, but I don't want my IQ tested right now. My reaction time is pretty low. I can eventually still get there ... but it's like running in water/sand. I do make myself do "mind games" just to keep it working. My body I'm willing to let turn to flab, I'm more reluctant to say goodbye to my mind.

I don't think their is any actuall proof of brain damage. most people when having iq tests remain the same. I have heard that we can get some spots on the brain from fibromyalgia though. Do you have both arilyn

I dont think that CFs causes brain damage, the fatigue causes a brain fog, same as fibromyalgia. Please don't worry, you have got enough on your plate
