Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...
I have Celiac disease but also get the rash and blisters from gluten (DH). I am on Dapsone for the rash but I don't knowif your baby is old enough to take it or if they even give it to children.I also take Zyrtec to relieve the itching. It takes a long time being gluten free to get rid of the rash. It has collected under the skin all your life and your body needs to rid itself of all of it. It will stop eventually if you remain GF but every time you inadvertly ingest gluten you will breakout again. What is causing her to break out-is it the gluten or other food allergies? I find Vaseline very soothing. I also have a prescription ointment. Maybe a prescription used for eczema would help her. The itch of DH is horrible so if this is what she has she is miserable-poor darling. good luck! Also make sure what you put on her body is gluten free also because of hand-mouth contact.
I was diagnosed with an elimination diet from a doctor, but it hasn't helped me from the standpoint of other doctors or situations that would require a "real" diagnosis. Or the ADA.
And, if you do have a diagnosis of celiac, you and your spouse and other children should be tested genetically for this as well. It's better to know that more of you should be GF than to wait and develop more severe problems later on. And it makes going GF in your home much easier! www.celiac.com is a great place to get lots of help for staying GF, and there are other websites as well that offer great info! Hang in there, and do whatever it takes to get the best diagnosis and help you can!
