Celiac Disease Support Group
Celiac disease is an auto-immune disorder of the digestive system that occurs in genetically-predisposed individuals. It is characterised by damage or flattening to all or part of the villi lining the small intestine, which interferes with the absorption of nutrients. This damage is caused by eating anything with gluten (gliadin), a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley...

I have read up on celiac sprue.
unfortunately i don't have the means to be properly diagnosed with what kind of celiac disease i have. but my boyfriends mom is a nurse and has all the medical books. so we were reading and she told me that i could possibly have small intestinal failure when i get older and have children with "ritters" if i don't keep myself from gluten. is this true? i am very worried- it's insanley hard for me to keep gluten free. becuase even my parents serve me things without telling me it's gluten free- i ahve leanred to always look myself but even in restaurants when they say it's not i later find out (by becomming sick) that it must have been--
i'm kind of nervous about this-
can somebody give me more insight about the problems that are possibly erupting?

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
IMO it is absolutely impossible to be 100% gluten-free unless you eat strictly at home all of the time. However, if you do attempt to control everything you eat, at restaurants and at friend's and relative's houses, you will be doing all you can.
There are times a person must eat out. When you are travelling, for example. When I travel, I have certain chain restaurants that I eat at because I have learned they use only 100% pure ground beef, for example, in their hamburgers. Ask them. Most places are becoming more aware. Especially national chains. Most problems come with small-town local restaurants.
As I said in answer to a recent post, I gave up everything except meat, veggies, rice and potatoes, and then added food back as I found out it was acceptable. Become a label reader. Know your ingredients. There are lots of sites online to help you out.
If you explain to your friends the situation, most people are fairly tolerant. In fact, most people know someone else in the same situation. You'll be surprised how many people have the same situation you do!!!
I also cannot eat msg and, like has been discussed here, dairy....talk about restricted diet!! But it's been over 12 years for me, and I'm used to it.
You will get used to it. It is very hard at first, but the cravings eventually go away. The gluten free alternatives do help the cravings. Especially the donuts, cookies, etc. My kids actually prefer my cookies to theirs. And the mixes cut down on the expense a lot.
Wishing you all the best! Hope this site helps you in your new lifestyle!
