Where do I begin,,,.I get a call @ 1;00 and its my Dad, "Mom's sugar level is well up past 500! (DS readers:which if you dont already know, it very dangerous). Shes been in the ER 4 times since August. So I said what did she eat today, and waht did she start out at??? Woke up at 300, still not a good number and had Oatmeal which + carbs not good for a diabetic at 300 , ate luch, Proteins which are better and its up over 500. So I say she shouldnt eat and take her to the mall and hopefully you can walk it off. So about 2:00, he calls agian , she got sick at the mall and has a migraine headache and its still over 500. I say "Take her to the ER!", but she doesnt want to go unless her Dr. tells her to. Tried the Drs office and its busy, busy, busy. So I call my Dr , we have agreat relationship and I wanted to be sure @ the ER, and he cant give me advise legally over the phone,(shes not his patient) but said if it was his mother, he would take her the ER. I call her Dr back and leave amesage that shes on way to the ER again... And my Dad begs her to go and he takes her down. I have to take care of cars and kids and then I go down. Everytime she's in the hospital a new Dr sees her and they only get a snapshot of her health. So before I leave I go to the nurse in charge and explain all of this and to tell then that she has been diagoased w Alzheimers. ( the "elephant in the room"sydrome, we all know but we dont like to talk about it) And I ask where does each ER report go? to which DR?, (Mom has one for the diabetes and a overall health provider.) The ER dept says to both Drs. And I say well no one seems to be getting the whole picture and I dont know what to do except keep bringing back here when it gets out of control.. I know the steps to take when a person s sugar levels are out the roof and Ive explained them to parents several times. But neither are listening, instead they call me:( So I suggest to the ER Nurse, if possible that the ER DR in charge to insist that they go to the Diabetic Clinic in the hospital to see if this might help. This is something my father would like to do, but she wont. I felt that if it came from a DR, she might be more willing...
