Has anyone ever been involved in a fundraiser for a person with medical needs? A friend has cancer and is losing her home and wanted help having a rummage sale of her belongings to help pay her medical bills. So a few other friends and myself thought it would be a good idea to have her sale in our church (because of weather issues) and also donate items to it and give her the money. Only we want to make sure we do it right and legally. I do not know if there are tax implications for her. I have been searching the internet and I am only finding information about actual charity groups... any advice on where to look? The laws may be different state to state, we are in wisconsin.

I am from the uk so it is obviously different. Here, we do have to get permission from the local council if we are fundraising in a public place - also we need to register for any type of raffle we have, even if in a private house! better safe than sorry - I'm sure other people in the states will answer this question....the very BEST of good luck to you for doing so much to help your friend *smiling*

Well, I am from Canada and there are no laws to prohibit having a yard sale, or other type of sale (except raffles) and then you can give $$ to whoever... Have done so for a dear friend a few back who had cancer - we raised over $800 by the way :o) But again, like Cathrynn says, the U.S. may have different laws (even different states may have different laws). Good luck to you and to your friend.

I am in New York State. And currently planning a fundraiser to help my friend's family. I would suggest going to speak to someone at your local bank. We have been able to set up a foundation in the name of my friend, and it has been classified as not-for-profit, totally tax exempt!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
