From the Oxford American Dictionary:
"spiritual:
1. of, relating to, or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things; not concerned with material values or pursuits.
2. of or relating to religion or religious belief"
Notice the heirarchy of definitions here.
Notice, also, the lack of mention of a god.
As well, a few lines down, an interesting definition of "spiritus":
Latin term for BREATH, often used figuratively to mean spirit.
Out of curiosity, I also looked up the word "religion" (as separate from spirituality). The initial definition cites "the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power"...however, further definitions (not numbered "2, 3, etc., all contained in the only definition) talk about "details of a belief" and "a particular system of faith or worship". It is also well to keep in mind that certain Asian spiritual traditions have a wholly different concept of "god" than western spiritual traditions. Buddhist scholars, for instance, are often heard to assert that, from a western point of view, Buddhism is not a god-centered spirituality because the concept of "gods" is meant to imply something similar to "drives" which are internal to existence...not external, as western god-religions often imply.
I would not let anyone throw sand in the sandbox!
I would reward all good countries with icecream sundaes!
Bad countries would have to go to time out in my grandma's living room with the plastic covered furniture!
