Breastfeeding Support Group
While breastfeeding is recommended by many doctors, it is not as simple as it seems. This is a community dedicated to parents who are choosing to breastfeed, providing a safe place to discuss everything from pumping, to questions of whether baby is getting enough, weaning, breast care, scheduling, supply, and more.

Hi ladies,
As you all know, my son is primarily breastfed, but does get a bottle of expressed milk once a day from his daddy (need to prepare him for daycare :( ). Well, this week we've noticed he's been such a horrible bottle eater when he used to do great! Instead of the 4-5 oz. he used to eat, he now only takes in about 3 1/2. He also gets fussy and protests the bottle, is a little more gassy and just rolls the nipple around in his mouth instead of sucking. I'm wondering if maybe he's ready for a stage two nipple and is just frustrated, so gives up a little early. He'll be 3 months on Feb. 5, which I know is usually when you would think about making the switch. Thoughts?

I kept my son on stage 1 nipples until he turned a year and we switched to sippy cups. I have heard that the faster flow nipples can interfere with breastfeeding since the baby gets used to the milk coming out faster and can become dissatisfied with the breast, but I'm sure that's not always the case.

That is absolutely a fear since I'd prefer to BF for a full year. The only reason it might not be an issue is because I have a fast flow, so I think he's probably emptying me more quickly than a bottle.

I replied to your post on the parenting newborn about this, but thought I'd add one more thing. I had a really fast flow up until about 2-3 weeks ago. I'm not sure if the flow naturally slows down, but mine certainly did and since then we've had issues with my daughter wanting to be on the breast vs taking a bottle. I'm sure this isn't the case with everyone, but just thought I'd share my experience. This is really why I'm keeping my daugther on the stage 1 nipples for as long as possible. Personally, I want to make her work for the milk from the bottle so that she finds the breast easier.

I've always been the kinda person to make sure that everyone I Care about feels appreciated and knew somebody had their back. I can count 4 times this year when I Went out of my way to make sure a "friend" felt good on their birthday, especially if they got left hanging. Its early in the...
