Breastfeeding Support Group
While breastfeeding is recommended by many doctors, it is not as simple as it seems. This is a community dedicated to parents who are choosing to breastfeed, providing a safe place to discuss everything from pumping, to questions of whether baby is getting enough, weaning, breast care, scheduling, supply, and more.

I delivered my baby girl 8 days ago and I've been having a difficult time pumping. I tried breastfeeding in the hospital with the help of a lactation specialist but I wasn't producing anything at the time (they weighed baby before/after feedings) and my nipples became so sore and bloody that they said I needed to take a few days off to heal. Now that I'm home, I've been pumping every 2 hours (with the exception of the middle of the night) but I'm only producing about a quarter of an ounce total each time I pump (most of it from my left breast, hardly anything comes out of the right). Is this normal 8 days after delivery? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I would love to be able to exclusively give her breast milk and not have to supplement 90% of her feedings with formula. Thank you!!

I gave my 2 week notice last Friday 13th. Now to join you fine people in a life of leisure and nothing else to do but to look out for myself....is it just me or does that sound pretty boring? My goal was to live to retire and I guess having to take early retirement because of health reasons wasn't exactly the way I had planned things. I just can't stay in that building that is reeking mildew...

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Okay on to the milk production... I felt the same way you did . My milk wasn't coming in well. Mine finally came in really good about the second week so DON"T GIVE UP : ) Maybe have your little one nurse on them even if the milk isn't all there. I kept nursing and supplementing with formula and then my milk came in about 10th or 11th day.. I think maybe it helped for my baby to stimulate milk production by nursing even though milk hadn't come down yet. Also, in the hospital my nurse recommended using a syrenge with a tube attached so i could nurse and baby would still be fed without using a bottle. You can ask your lactation nurse for one of those and get her to show you how. Don't give up : )
Is she having latching problems? If not, I'd let her get on your breast...she can stimulate more milk than a pump can.
I also just wanted to add that I never felt my "milk come in"....it was just in. I've also never felt my let down...and my dd is 11 weeks old. I also rarely feel engorged either....I have to touch my breasts to see how they feel. So I don't think everyone feels milk come in and letdowns and things. I would watch your baby and listen to see if she's swallowing...and then pay attention to weight gain and things.
good luck!
I've also heard that eating oatmeal (real oats, not instant kind) and raspberries works as well as drinking 1 beer a day. I've been doing all of those (a beer every other day) and my supply seems to be good so take that for what its worth - I was willing to try anything. Good luck and hope it gets better for you!
Oh - I had bought a medela pump but returned it after the lactation people at the hospital told me just to use the rented one from them (Ameda brand) since I'd be using it so much I would wear out the one I bought and the hospital grade one was stronger. So if you aren't renting one from the hospital now, maybe look into that.
Also, I heard dark chocolate, oatmeal and beer help as well! Stay away from mint tea.. and altoids even...that can take away from what I have read. I hope that helps! Hang in there.. I promise your milk will come in and it will get easier! It took me until week 7 but after that it has been clear sailing.
You didn't mention if you were also bf or just pumping. I would assume you're nursing too. With both of my kids I over-produced my milk but I couldn't start doing that until a few weeks had passed. I would give it a little more time.
Good luck!
another thing is my kids have thrush issues like they get tounge pain but the tounge hardly ever gets coated with white.
see if your dr will give you a script for APNO (all purpose nipple ointment) that stuff is awesome.
Glad to hear the nipple shield is working. It was a ,ice saver for me!
It is always better to see an lc late, than never! That woman was incredibly rude. But I am sure that she was not thinking!

Good luck, keep it up. BF does depend to a large degree on your determination.
Anyway, I hope you and your daughter are doing great, and have a wonderful bonding time while nursing! Congratulations on your sweet little girl!
