I was in a very toxic relationship for 4 years. What scares me is that I stayed with it for so long and even after I have left and all of the crap that happened I think I must be sick because the pain is so intense and I know that the best thing in the world for me is the end of the relationship, but I still miss who I thought he was and what I thought we had. Why can't I take this new information about this person and say "good riddance". I fear it is addiction.

I think we hang on to what we think could have been or should have been in a relationship and that makes the pain that much worse. I SO understand the toxic relationship. I believe my stbx is actually doing me a favor by letting me go, because I am the better person. (I've got to keep telling myself that over and over to believe it, but it is true!) The other person is almost like an addiction in that we have vested so much time and energy into that person/relationship that we can't just say "poof, you're gone"...but wouldn't it be nice right about now??? Stay close by to DS, we all support one another! HUGS!

I've recently gotten out of a six yr relationship that was so emotionally abusive and I'm also having such a hard time letting go. I let him kill my spirt and still hold on to the idea that he might take me back...I understand how you feel.

I was in a toxic relationship for most of the 22 years I was married and was afraid to get out of it, stayed way to long and should have got out when I had the chance 10 years ago. Whats the signs and how do we avoid going down the same road, I guess if we had that answer none of us would go there.

It is hard because you think about the past and how you were connected to that person. I have alot of the same feelings you have.

I feel the same way but I have invested 14 years in this man and he cant be what I need him to be. We have 3 little kids and I think that is why I have hung on so long. I also think I am addicted to this relationship. I am trying to break it but it keeps reeling me back in

I too feel the way you do and have no idea how to deal with this. I don't think it's addiction but a loss of what could have been with a person that doesn't exist. I agree with journey7.


Wick, your response lead me to do a search of the signs ("signs of a toxic relationship" is what I typed in the search bar) and I did find allot of sites of course. There are 8 kinds of toxic relationships. I would post a site here but maybe you can search yourselves and find out all the signs so you don't go down that road again.

I for one have had my eyes opened and now know the signs to watch for and possible questions to ask a future man while still in the dating stages.

I hope this helps us see more clearly for the future. Sorry I can't help with more.

    theatre and I are there already. I'm having a very berry tea with crackers, cheese and cherry tomatoes and she's having a joint with some beer and we're both on really comfy recliners on thick pile carpet. we need some help with the decor if anyone is around??

    I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
