Plus good security around your laptop ?
You'll get a Network Connections dialog box similar to this. My network connection is an Ethernet connection, but yours might be wireless. Right-click on the network connection you use, then select "Properties" from the context menu that pops up.

At that point, you'll get the Network Connection Properties box for that particular connection.
You may need to use the scroll bar to see "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". Once you find File and Printer Sharing, uncheck the checkbox to turn off File and Printer Sharing. Then, click on the OK button. also....you can turn off REMOTE ASSISTANCE to stop that. Without knowing what all you have installed on that computer its hard to assume a few things.
Turn off REMOTE DESKTOP:
right click on MY COMPUTER and go to PROPERTIES and click on REMOTE, then take the checkmark out of ALLOW REMOTE ASSISTANCE. You can always turn it on if you ever need someone to log onto your machine remotely for help.
2. By default with WIN XP PRO SP2 firewall should be on.
3. If you wanna see the most recent activity on your computer...click on START then RUN and type in EVENTVWR.MSC and you can take a look at what your computer has been logging as far as crashes go....or errors....and even when someone connects to you remotely.
Any more questions please feel free to ask. ;)

Make sure that their is nothing getting anywhere.
I do have "security", but stbx has GOTOYOURPC and several other things, and I don't know if he can use that stuff on My computers...argh :-(
