When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning ... uphill BOTH ways .. yadda, yadda, yadda
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!
But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don't know how good you've got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet.
If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalog!!
There was no email! ! We had to actually write somebody a letter ... with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!
There were no MP3's or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the damn record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up!
We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!
And we didn't have fancy Caller ID Boxes either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like " Space Invaders" and "asteroids" and the graphics were horrible! Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died!. Just like LIFE!
When you went to the movie theater there was no such thing as stadium seating! All the seats were the same height! If a tall guy or some old broad with a hat sat in front of you and you couldn't see, you were just screwed!
Sure, we had cable television, but back then that was only like 15 channels and there was no onscreen menu and no remote control! You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on!
You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your ass and walk over to the TV to change the channel and there was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little bastards!
And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up, we had to use the stove or go build a fire ... imagine that! If we wanted popcorn, we had to use that stupid JiffyPop thing and shake it over the stove forever like an idiot.
That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled . You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980!

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
Rotary telephones, no push buttons or speed dials. We had to spin the thingie clockwise 7 times to attempt a call.
Phonographs. Records usually lasted 4-5 songs/side, then we had to walk over and flip the disc over to hear the rest of the album.
gas station restrooms. they were not air-conditioned and they were not sanitary in the least, plus you had to ask the actual gas station guy for a key to access the damn thing. there was no stopping for an emergency pooh on the road back then, not even an option.
we used to play, outside, with sphere like objects called balls. often we did this for hours, and even formed opposing squads amongst the neighborhood children. if you were really lucky...about once a summer you'd come across a pool in the area that had a big pole in the ground with a roped ball attached to it. TETHERBALL!
We consumed this thing called water, right out of the yard hose, to quench midday thirsts. we didnt get the 72 oz Mountain Dew Big Gulp.
LOL. If I don't joke around & laugh, I may kill someone.
Cable TV??? What was that???
We only had three channels... count 'em THREE!!! and one of those was French... and how about if you fell asleep, and woke up after the news was over... you were confronted with a scene with different coloured lines, and a high-pitched buzzing...
And Atari 2600... wow, your parents must have been loaded, we has Telstar, and thought we were the Bee's Knees. Our dog loved to chase the little square around the screen.
And, I get the impression you were city-folk, unlike us country-folk, because yes, we had to "dial" the telephone and watch the disc slowly return to the beginning before moving on to the next number, BUT... we had what was called a PARTY-LINE... which meant that you shared your phone line with the other people further down your dirt road, so you would have to listen to make sure the line was free before you could use it, and of course that also meant that they could listen in on your conversation.
And movie theatres??? At least you were indoors!!! Don't get me started on Drive-ins. We would sneak over to the canteen at the drive-in, and climb up on the roof so we could "watch" the movie... no sound of course, because we didn't have a car to hang the speaker off of.
And how many of you remember a real drive-up A&W??? with the trays that NEVER stayed attached to your car window. You ate in your seat in the car, but at least you didn't have to worry about seat belts... seat whats???
Ohh, those were the days... Thanks for taking me back down memory lane guys!!!
We didn't have cellphones. You had to be in the house by the time the day turned to dusk and the street lights went on or your mother would scream your name at the top of her lungs and embarass you.
You didn't get Edy's, Ben&Jerry's or whatever other fancy ice cream there is today, you had to RUN after Mr Softee or the Carvel Ice Cream Truck.
RUN - do you kids know what that means? Probably not since you are on your damn cellphones playing Wii on the couch.
Food: There was no Cool Ranch, Buffalo Wing, Jalepeno Doritos. It was original flavor and that was it. You didn't have Oreos with mint filling, or oreos with vanilla cookies, you had one choice and it was chocolate with cream filling.
The car didn't park itself you had to learn how to drive and parallel park.
Imagine!!!
