Ever since I started on prozac I've been having hypnagogic hallucinations coming in and out of sleep during the night. Usually it's something benign like phosphenes, strange glyphs on the wall beside me, or a friendly cartoon lobster.
Sometimes it's spiders.
Giant spiders. The first ones I saw when I lived alone in my apartment. They'd be about the size of a human hand, dangling from the ceiling in front of the window by a thin line of webbing. Then they'd get closer. I'd wake up with a giant imaginary spider on the pillow beside me. It would sit there for about five to ten seconds and fade like an apparition. It wasn't a threatening experience - I sensed no malicious intent from the imaginary spiders.
Until a week ago I was sleeping on my back on the couch in the living room when I felt myself suddenly awake. My eyes opened and I saw a giant ghost spider coming down off the ceiling only inches over my face. I startled and did a back flip falling off the couch to get away.
Of course, when I looked up it was gone.
Fucking spiders.
