Okay, I'm 56 years old and am used to having my husband and son add motor oil to my cars. My low oil light came on a little while ago and I have some new containers of oil in the garage that the STBX left. However, one says 10W40 and the other says 10W30. How do I know which one to use? Also, I think I know where to put the oil. Do I clean the little stick off and then only add the oil till it says full? I'm not about to call the STBX cause he wouldn't answer anyway and my son is playaing golf and won't answer his phone. My dad's in the hospital so I need help!! Also, I got to thinking that my husband used to add something somewhere under the hood when it gets cold weather. It's still warm here in Texas but I'm thinking I might need to go ahead and buy whatever it is that I need for cold weather. Course I have no idea what it is or where to put it??? I'd really appreciate anyone's help on this. I'm really trying hard to do so much for myself these days but I get so frustated and mad at myself because I should already know how to do this sort of thing! I'm not helpless I have just had a husband that always took care of the car's maintenance.

I'm trying to exercise daily. I was doing fairly well until I sprained my ankle 2 weeks ago but now I'm getting back on the horse. Today I walked over a mile with my arm weights that are about 22lbs total. I was out of shape and it was hard on my arms. I also did my 30 situps. I'm also going to drink a lot of water and try to eat healthy. I do tend to have a sweet tooth but I'm cutting...
I just have the oil changed every 3000 miles or 3 months. The only thing I need in between is air in my tires. And I live in a place of extreme weather swings, and my car is 12 years old.
To add oil to the car you really need to know what oil is in the car. Adding 10W40 to 10W30 is not good. If you are in Texas I would think you have 10W30. But you need to check it to be sure.
You will need anti-freeze/coolant to keep the car from overheating or having the water in the radiator from freezing. Most coolants/antifreeze are together these days. Keeps you from having to change it out every fall and spring. You can buy some that is already mixed and all you have to do is pout it in. You can do this directly into the radiator. It should be at the very front of the engine. However, do this only when the engine is cool and not warm-this stuff will spew out if the engine is hot or warm; it will cause burns.
Best bet-go to an oil change place and have them do it this time. Learn what weight oil they use and what brand. Learn it, know it, you will be tested on it at some time.
I don't have too much money, but I don't see the value of learning this stuff. Fortunately, I have a garage I can trust.
coolant/antifreeze when it gets cooler weather. I can remember my dad just driving to the gas station and an attendant taking care of the oil issues. That was the good old days! LOL! Okay, off to Auto Zone.
If there is a manual in the glove compartment there should be recommendations as to what type of oil and the changes in oil for the temperature.
I never hesitate to ask someone, or to drive into a service station and ask.
at least ur not useless like my EX who would let the car go without oil.
